The forest goes quiet first. The trackers raise a hand, the guides lower their voices, and a silverback shifts through the bamboo close enough that you can hear him feeding. Travelers who reach this moment in Rwanda tend to say the same thing afterward: nothing prepared them for it.
Gorillas are the headline, but they are not the only reason Rwanda belongs on your travel bucket list in 2027. In one small country you can also track chimpanzees, walk a canopy bridge above an ancient rainforest and watch lions and elephants on a savanna game drive. Below are seven reasons to go, a sample itinerary and a few planning notes to help you start.
1. Mountain gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park
Rwanda is one of only three countries where you can see mountain gorillas in the wild, and Volcanoes National Park is the easiest to reach, roughly two to three hours by road from Kigali. Treks are led by experienced guides and trackers, with a maximum of eight visitors per gorilla family each day and a one-hour visit once you find them.
Permits are issued through the Rwanda Development Board, and tourism revenue helps fund conservation and the communities around the park. A gorilla trek is best seen as an investment in an experience, and in the animals' future, rather than a simple purchase.
2. Three national parks and a lake, each with its own adventure
Gorillas are only the beginning. Rwanda's three national parks and its largest lake offer very different experiences, and many travelers combine two or three of them in one trip.
Volcanoes National Park
Gorillas, golden monkeys and volcano hikes. Besides gorilla trekking, the park in the Virunga mountains offers a full program of activities.
- Golden monkey trekking. Rare, energetic primates in the bamboo forest, and a lively companion trek to the gorillas.
- Dian Fossey tomb hike. A guided forest hike to the grave of the researcher who dedicated her life to mountain gorillas.
- Mount Bisoke volcano hike. A full-day climb to the crater lake with sweeping views over the Virunga range.
- Culture and conservation. Visit the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, or spend time with the community at Gorilla Guardians Village.
Nyungwe National Park
Chimpanzees, canopy walk and forest hikes. Nyungwe is an ancient montane rainforest in the southwest, ideal for travelers who like walking and birdwatching.
- Chimpanzee trekking. Track habituated chimpanzees through the forest with an experienced guide.
- Canopy Walk. A suspended walkway that lets you look down on the treetops from high above the forest floor.
- Zipline adventure. An adrenaline option for a different view of the canopy.
- Guided forest walks and birding. Trails of varying lengths suit casual walkers and keen birdwatchers alike.
Akagera National Park
Big Five game drives and the lake. Akagera is Rwanda's only savanna park, a landscape of open plains, wetlands and lakes in the east of the country.
- Big Five game drives. Look for lions, elephants, rhinos, leopards and buffalo, alongside giraffes, zebras and antelope.
- Boat cruise on Lake Ihema. See hippos, crocodiles and water birds from the water.
- Night game drive. A guided drive after dark to look for nocturnal wildlife.
Lake Kivu: Rwanda's Riviera
After the treks and game drives, Lake Kivu is the place to slow down. Along its shores, the towns of Rubavu, Karongi and Rusizi offer lakeside lodges, beaches and calm water.
- Relax by the water. Swim, sunbathe or enjoy a sunset over the hills of the lake shore.
- Boat trips and kayaking. Explore the lake and its islands at an easy pace.
- Congo Nile Trail. Hike or cycle sections of this scenic route along the lake.
- Coffee and local life. Learn about Rwandan coffee and meet the communities around the lake.
Choose a primate park, a safari park and a lake, and a single trip can feel like several destinations in one.
3. Safe, clean and easy to navigate
Rwanda has a reputation as one of Africa's safest and cleanest destinations, and Kigali is often praised for its tidy streets and orderly traffic. Single-use plastic bags have been restricted for years, and on the last Saturday of each month communities take part in Umuganda, the national clean-up day.
This makes Rwanda a comfortable first step into Africa for first-time visitors, solo travelers and families. As with any trip, check current travel advice before you go.
4. A compact country with short transfers
Rwanda is small, so you spend less time in the vehicle and more time on the experience. Kigali to Volcanoes National Park is a short road transfer, and Akagera is also within easy reach of the capital. Nyungwe takes longer to reach, so it suits a longer itinerary.
That means a well-planned trip of five to seven days can include primates, a savanna game drive and the capital without feeling rushed.
5. A conservation success story you can be part of
Mountain gorillas were once on the brink of extinction, and their recovery is one of conservation's best-known stories. Rwanda's approach ties protection to tourism and to the people who live beside the parks.
Each year the country celebrates this with Kwita Izina, the gorilla naming ceremony. The 21st ceremony took place in Kinigi, Musanze, in September 2026. Dates vary from year to year, so ask us if you would like to plan a trip around it.
6. Culture, history and a story of renewal
Rwanda's appeal goes beyond wildlife. In Kigali, a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial offers an honest, respectful introduction to the country's past and its path to rebuilding. Elsewhere you can watch Intore dance, meet communities near the parks, join a coffee experience or explore Nyandungu Eco Park.
These experiences give a wildlife trip depth and context.
7. Easy to combine with the rest of East Africa
Rwanda pairs naturally with its neighbors. You can add gorilla and chimpanzee trekking in Uganda, a Big Five safari in Kenya's Maasai Mara, or a Tanzania safari to the same journey.
Vazquez Tours & Travel plans trips across Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania, so a multi-country itinerary can be arranged as one connected trip.
The best time to visit Rwanda in 2027
Gorilla trekking runs all year, but the two dry seasons, roughly June to September and December to February, are generally the most comfortable for trekking and game viewing. Trails are drier and easier to walk.
The rainy months bring greener scenery and can suit travelers who prefer a quieter trip and don't mind packing rain gear. Whatever the season, book early, since permits and good lodging are limited.
